Knee Osteoarthritis Treatment

 Osteoarthritis (OA) causes cartilage degradation, bone remodeling, osteophyte formation, and synovial inflammation, resulting in pain, stiffness, edema, and loss of joint function.


 The management of knee OA aims to reduce pain, improve function, and prevent further joint damage. Treament for knee OA include both non_surgical and surgical treatment options.

Non-surgical treament options include:

                          1-Pharmacological Treatment:

                                     NSAIDS(oral or topical form)

                           2-Intra-articular corticosteroids injection


                           3-Hyaluronic acid injection

                           4-Platelet-Rich-plasma(PRP)

                           5 -Stem cells

                            6-Acupuncture

                            7-Physiotherapy:

                                      (Muscle Strengthening Exercises,Isometric Exercises,Patellar             mobilization,Quardiceps massage,Electrical stimulations,Hot/cold therapy,Dorsiflexion).


 Surgical Treatment:

          a- Total Knee Arthroplasty

           b-Unicompartmental knee Arthroplasty


The first line treatment include medication and physiotherapy along with the lifestyle changes and orthotic devices such as knee braces if required. Arthroplasty is a surgical option to treat patients with extreme cases of knee joint degeneration; it can be total (total knee replacement, TKR) or unicompartmental (partial knee replacement, PKR), depending on the degree of OA.
